He travelled to the mountain with around 300 followers. As recounted in the book A Step Away from Paradise by Thomas K Shor, survivors of the event recounted that Lingpa and a few others who'd gone on ahead to do a reconnaissance of the route saw a series of bright lights calling them toward a gateway.
