1956 with Bob le flambeur, Melville really hit his stride with Le Doulos. The title is a slang reference to the hat worn by shady criminals at the time, not dissimilar to the Fedoras and Trilbies worn by gangsters in earlier American films. Because such hats somewhat obscured the face into shadow, the term came to mean those who were police informants; those with something to hide.
